Welcome to the Sprawl
This site provides a brief window into the world of Dead Space 2 for new players and those interested in its dark lore.
Dead Space 2 is the sequel to Dead Space and the second game in the Dead Space trilogy. It takes place 3 years after the first game. After the events of the first game, Issac Clarke was found in the escape shuttle by EarthGov forces. They took him to Titan Station, colloquially known as the Sprawl, a massive 11-mile-long space station built into remnants of one of Saturn’s moons, Titan. It is densely populated, with over a million residents. It contains many different types of locations such as schools, shopping districts, government districts, and so forth. During those 3 years on the station, Isaac was held in a psychiatric facility and the staff ran experiments on him under the instruction of EarthGov. After the events of the USG Ishimura, and his interactions with the Marker on Aegis VII, his mind was left imprinted with instructions on how to make another marker. EarthGov wanted to use him to make another marker and use it as a source of clean energy. However, the marker was using them the whole time and it lead to another outbreak on the Sprawl.
Just as the outbreak begins, Isaac is woken up from stasis by someone who wants to help save him. However, he is immediately grabbed and turned into a Necromorph by an infector. Isaac escapes the situation and makes a plan to escape the psych ward as it all devolves into chaos around him. As he escapes the psych ward, Isaac runs into another man who claims to know him, his name is Nolan Stross. As Isaac journeys through the sprawl he is contacted by a woman named Daina who says that she can help him and makes a plan to meet up with him. Along the way, he his antagonized by a man named Hans Tiedman, the leader of the EarthGov forces on the Sprawl. Forced to fight through familiar and new nightmares, Isaac is also confronted with visions of his dead girlfriend, Nicole Brennan, who killed herself on the Ishimura before she could be turned into a necromorph. When Isaac finally meets up with Daina, it turns out that she was a Unitoligist, a member of the religion known as Unitology.
They considered the late Micheal Altman to be a prophet and worshipped the marker, believing that it will be the cause of Convergence, an event that will lead to the rebirth of humanity in its perfection. However, these ideas were first implanted in its founding members by one of the first markers ever found. In reality it causes the reanimation of corpses into horrific necromorphs.
After Daina’s reveal, they are attacked by Tiedman, killing Daina and her accomplices. Isaac just manages to escape through an escape hatch that leads him deeper into the Sprawl. Later he meets another survivor named Ellie Langford. She was a pilot for the CEC(Concordance Extraction Corporation), the same mining company that Isaac worked for before he was taken by EarthGov. She distrusts Isaac and leaves on her own, leaving Isaac to continue to try and find a way to destroy the marker. Eventually Ellie runs into Stross, and informs Isaac, who is surprised to hear from her again. He tells her that Stross is needed to destroy the marker, claiming that Stross knows how. They discover that the Marker is being held in the Government Sector and attempt to make their way over. However, Tiedman finds out where they are and destroys the tram rail that leads over there, preventing them from crossing the station. That’s when Isaac learns that EarthGov not only recovered Isaac from the wreckage of Aegis VII, but also the Ishimura. Isaac makes a plan to board it and use its gravity tethers to realign the tram rail.
There, Isaac is forced to further confront his visions of Nicole and the nightmares of the Ishimura. Eventually he makes it to the command deck, and activates the gravity tether, fixing the tram rail. As Ellie and Stross make their way over towards the Government sector, Isaac uses an escape pod to launch his way over. Unfortunately, the pod loses course and crashes into the remnants of the moon Titan. Issac makes his way to reunite with Ellie and Stross he disembarked on a different part of the moon’s remnants. However, Stross had also been suffering from the same type of hallucinations as Isaac, seeing visions of his dead wife and son that he killed when driven insane by the marker. Eventually he snaps and stabs out one of Ellie’s eyes and runs away. As Isaac attempts to reunite with Ellie and ensure that she is still alive, he gets attacked by Stross. In their struggle, Isaac is forced to kill Stross.
Meeting up with Ellie at a massive drill, they get it working and drill through the rock and into the government sector. Breaking through a wall into the foyer, Ellie and Isaac split up to find a way deeper into government sector. Ellie finds a working gunship and excitedly informs Isaac that they can finally escape. Isaac however, still has unfinished business and doesn’t want Ellie to get hurt more so he manually sends off the gun ship with Ellie inside, leaving him alone to face Tiedman and his forces. After making it past the large doors in the foyer, Isaac manages to avoid getting shot and runs to a power terminal. Shutting off the power to the main door, allowing a horde of necromorphs in to kill the security forces.
As Isaac makes his way closer to the marker, he comes to terms with his guilt and the visions of Nicole change from antagonistic, to wanting to help him. She leads him to a machine that sticks a needle into his eye and exctraccts the data from Isaac’s head, curing him of his mental visions and from slowly killing him. Making his way through hordes of necromorphs, Isaac finally makes his way to the marker. He is confronted by Tiedman who shoots a javelin spike into Isaac’s hand. Isaac pushes though the pain and grabs the javelin gun, forcing it to Tiedman’s head, and firing it into his head. Isaac walks up to the marker and is hugged by his vision of Nicole, thinking he can now rest, only to get sucked into some sort of mental wasteland. Nicole, or rather the marker, attempt to kill Isaac, since to complete the convergence event, the creator of the marker must die. Isaac manages to fend of marker Nicole and the horde of the pack that it sends at him. After destroying the marker, Isaac is freed from the mental wasteland and is left alone as the station blows up around him. At that moment he is contacted by Ellie who came back to rescue him. Activating his thrusters, Isaac flies up to Ellie as pieces of debris from the exploding station fly around him. Ellie grabs Isaac’s arm and pulls him into the gunship as they fly away from the station.
